Which part of the island is the best for family holidays?
Tenerife can be devided into three parts: the South, the North and the metropolitan zone of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna.
The south of Tenerife includes Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes and other towns. The south has a much warmer climate and if you are planning to travel in the winter time, we would recommend you to choose the south. The weather in the north of Tenerife can be a little chilly with lower temperatures. The south has more beaches and offers more touristic activities, it attracts people from different countries like UK, Germany, France, Belgium and others. El Medano is the surfing paradise and many competitions are organised there every year, but you need to keep in mind that it is very windy.
The North includes Puerto de la Cruz, Garachico, La Orotava and other towns. It is more authentic and less touristic, we would recommend it to families that like the nature, like trekking or want to have a more authentic Spanish experience. You can find more local restaurants and wonderful black beaches in the north.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island. Every year at the end of February – the begining of March they have the second biggest carnaval in the world which is compared to the carnaval of Rio de Janeiro. La Laguna is the oldest city in Tenerife, it has a lot of history and hosts the only university in Tenerife.
